Avoiding medical errors in the hospital

By Rosenberg, Minc, Falkoff & Wolff, LLP. posted in Hospital Negligence on Tuesday, August 07, 2018.

People in New York who have to seek medical care at the hospital may be better served by not going in the afternoon. Like in other occupations, people who work in the hospital are likely to experience fatigue and a reduction in productivity after lunch. However, when nurses and doctors experience fatigue, the outcome can be life-threatening.

According to a university review of 90,000 hospital surgeries, anesthesiologists are more likely to make errors when taking part in procedures that start during the hours of 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. According to the researchers of this particular study, the errors are the result of the anesthesiologists experiencing afternoon circadian lows, which causes a reduction in physician vigilance.

Patients who go to the hospital in the afternoon for surgery may also find that the surgical team that completes the surgery may be different from the one that started the procedure. This is because the majority of the surgical team, which consists of OR nurses, surgical technologists and anesthesiologists, comes to work between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. When the new surgical team assumes control in the middle of the procedure, members of the first surgical team may fail to relay important information regarding the patient, such as the original anesthesiologist failing to inform the replacement that a certain medication can cause a negative reaction in the patient.

An attorney who practices medical malpractice law may advise individuals who have been victims of substandard hospital care about their legal options. Multiple parties may be pursued for acts of medical malpractice that resulted in clients suffering injuries, worsening medical conditions, unnecessary treatment, delayed treatment, infections or death. Financial compensation may be sought from physicians for prescribing the wrong type of medication or from anesthesiologists for administering drugs that resulted in a severe allergic reaction.
