The gallbladder is a small organ that stores and releases the digestive fluid, bile secreted by the organ Liver. It plays crucial role in digestion of fats and their absorption in to digestive tract. Formation of small stones, the gallstones obstructs the flow of bile causing severe pain. The gallbladder is often removed to relieve the pain and avoid further complications.

Being situated in the midst of other organs of digestive system, gallbladder surgery has to be performed with great care. Any surgical error can result in serious consequences that can endanger a patient's health and even their life.

Types of gallbladder surgery

Surgical removal of gallbladder is performed in two ways - laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and the open gallbladder surgery.

In laparoscopic surgery, the gall bladder is removed by making multiple small incisions in the abdominal region. Small surgical tools are inserted into the abdominal cavity using a sophisticated instrument called trocars. The gallbladder is then removed by cutting and clipping the arteries and ducts associated with the gallbladder. Surgeon has to identify the appropriate ducts to cut without causing damage to other ducts or organs.

Open gallbladder surgery is performed by cut opening the abdominal cavity. Gallbladder is removed carefully by slightly moving the liver.

Risks of gallbladder surgery

Some of the common medical errors that happen during gallbladder surgery include

· Damage to the common bile duct: Bile duct functions to carry bile from gallbladder and liver to the small intestine. Perforation or complete cutting of bile ducts causes bile to flow into the abdomen that is highly dangerous. This type of error often causes the patient to undergo multiple surgeries to correct the error. Corrective surgeries often leave the patient with a narrowed common bile duct that causes digestive problems due to lack of sufficient bile flow. In certain cases, tubes are inserted inside the body to draw the bile into an external bag.

· Damage to other organs of digestive system: perforation of small intestine is the most commonly observed medical error associated with gallbladder surgery. Serious infections develop in the intestines due to leaking of contents of small intestine.

· Cholangitis: Damage to the common bile duct causes swelling of the bile duct that in turn causes contents of small intestine to flow upwards increasing the risk for cholangitis, a bacterial infection. If the infection is not diagnosed and treated early it leads to death.
